Dal Quattrocento Roma viene rifigurata in pari grado da edifici religiosi e da palazzi: questi ultimi condizionano il disegno delle strade, lapertura delle piazze e la percezione di una citt
Sixteenth-Century Palaces in Rome
Starting in the Quattrocento, Rome was refigured in equal degree by religious buildings and palaces. The latter conditioned the design of streets, the opening of squares and the perception of a city that the pontiffs promoted as the capital of the Christian world. If every high ranking prelate was a potential constructor of palaces, every nobleman, merchant, and even every successful artist and artisan could contribute with their dwelling places to the magnificence of the city. Within a few decades palaces would outclass religious architecture in the construction of the forma urbis Romae. Traditionally the study of palaces moves along distinct lines: the architectural structure; everyday and representative functions; pictorial cycles; sculptural decoration; the collections of art and antiquities. The conference Il palazzo a Roma nel Cinquecento: architettura e decorazione organized by Claudia Conforti and Giovanna Sapori in Rome in 2010, attested the urgent need to generate interdisciplinary research on all aspects of the palace, restoring the historical and symbolic solidarity of the construction and experimenting with innovative and hybrid interpretations and methods. This volume brings together the results of the studies conducted since that event, engaging different disciplines with the aim of reassembling the formal, material, symbolic and representative unity each palace expresses through its frescoes, its stones, its stuccos and its apparent and concealed geometries. The investigation of the Rome context is enriched by comparisons with contemporary developments in aristocratic residence building in France and England during the early modern era.The study of the decoration, fruit of an artists talents and at the same time a collective enterprise, sheds light on the problematic nature of concepts of style and authorship; the relationships among patrons, and between the patrons and artists; workshops, the organization of work and the circulation of models. From the perspective of the perception, and at the same time, of the printed transmission of images, commentary, and models, attention is also focused on the representation of the palaces, profiling their appearance in travelers guidebooks and in engravings.
